NEW ALBANY'S CITY ELECTION -- 2007

It's official. Having the new Mayor and others come into Hugh E. Bir's to celebrate gave me a chance to congratulate and make peace with some. In case some of you do not realize, when you run for office, you tend to make some enemies...just don't burn your bridges as you may need to go back across same.

My heartiest congratulations to Diane McCartan for beating Dick Bliss. Wonderful news for me, as Bliss and I never really cared for each other. Not sure why -- maybe it was the "party" thing. Surely am sorry to hear about your father and his heart attack. Hope all goes well.

Elections come, and elections go. Only make the best of it, and work with what you have now elected.

As the Democrats swept, with only Zurschmiede winning on the Republican side...the public spoke.

Turnout really sucked...it was that bad. If people really cared, it would have made a huge difference in the direction we will now head.

Best wishes to those who won...my condolences to Randy Hubbard -- who's credentials were absolutely impeccable. Thank you for your effort and all of your past public service. My admiration of you as a "good" person knows no bounds.

As England was once a Republican and so was Hubbard, maybe New Albany isn't as "Democrat" as they feel...I'm not sure.

Now, does anyone remember the Pavoni name and what happened with this scenario? As his firm is being offered up to be in charge of storm water, a lot of people may want to do their homework; or history -- as some would call it.

Been there and done that. Susan, I really didn't mean to upset you as badly as I did mentioning his name to you today and how they are offering him up for the position. Wonder how the EPA is going to handle same? Can't imagine it is going to be good.

As we have now reverted back to 12 years ago I only have my faith we can and will do the right thing now.

Peace, NA.

I agree, the turnout was so bad, almost disgusting!

Good job with pushing the people to vote! See ya on the flipside :-)

I listened to the election results on WNAS Radio (wish WNAS-TV was on the internet, instead of just on Insight Cable in New Albany). Excellent coverage, again! Yes, the turnout of people voting was very very low!!! Why?! We keep asking that question year after year. Some people say they don’t want to get mixed up in the politics of it all. Do you think there are citizens in New Albany, who suffer retaliation for what they say and do, or don’t do? Many of us know the answer to that question.

I doubt the honeymoon between Doug and the Council will last very long. Now the honeymoon with certain bloggers - it will depend on how much Doug is able to grant them for their businesses. Thing is, the rest of the citizens will pay for Doug’s ‘creative financing’ like happened in the past. Most citizens living in New Albany cannot afford any monetary increase in their costs of living. In my way of thinking, most Republican viewpoints are to reward the businesses holding their hands out for corporate welfare. We’ll have to see, if Doug continues that practice, to prove my belief that he is still a Republican disguised in Democrat trappings.

As to PAVONI – I sure wasn’t prepared to hear that name as soon as Doug won.
I guess he should have been expected to turn up - a sign of things to come. Don’t you think he should offer New Albany a deep discount on his services - like for free? Do you think he will just be in storm water or go to sewers also? Will the contracts hold up with EMC? What about that Consent Decree with EPA and Department of Justice over the sewers? Things will get very interesting in 2008! Citizens had better pay very close attention. Does everyone have the phone numbers to state and federal offices to do that reporting?

If I still lived in New Albany, I think I would try to form a local chapter of IKE (Improving Kids’ Environment). http://www.ikecoalition.org/index.html It is needed.

Good Luck New Albany!!!

Hmm, sounds like an accusation.

If I were still in New Albany ... wait, I am still in New Albany.

Exactly what is it that "certain bloggers" are supposed to be given?

Gee, I'd hate to call someone a liar ... again.

Please re-read and understand this was Susan Johnson writing how she feels and her opinions about this election. As she has moved to Louisville now, she has left New Albany...but her history is invaluable.

There just won't be too many people agreeing with you that the history of this town needs to be set out in front of us.

Speak on, Susan... As we watched Mr. Baylor write a letter criticizing Mayor England when he was last in office in the Tribune, which you answered -- it truly is almost comical.

What short memories some people have.

Read on, and write on, please Susan. Thanks.

Take care...you know how you are suppose to rest.

Cool. No more censorship.

To The New Albanian – you ask, “Exactly what is it that "certain bloggers" are supposed to be given?”

If you don’t know, I am sure not going to tell everyone. If we don’t give everyone ideas, it just might save the taxpayers some money.

Yes, I did add my 2 cents worth, responding to a Letter to the Tribune that Roger Baylor wrote. I believe that was you, New Albanian. Seems like it was back in the early 1990s. If I recall correctly, seems like Roger wasn’t happy with Mayor England.

Just watch and see what happens and who stays on the good side of the ‘new’ Mayor. But after I heard Doug on TV Tuesday, saying no more dog and pony shows, I’d say the ‘old’ Doug is back. May take a few months, but I see rough seas ahead. Hope I am wrong. Just my opinions!

Of course there have been times when I wasn't happy with Doug England. There probably will be other times, too.

Four years ago I gave Mayor Garner a rough time of it, then I thought about it, thought better of it, and I changed my mind. It happens all of the time, and it’ll happen again. If you wait until you’re absolutely sure about anything, then you’ll never do anything or say anything; you’ll just sit there and stew and die unfulfilled. Life's meant to be lived, and I intend to continue following that dictum until no longer able.

Then, I supported Mayor Garner in this year’s primary, and he lost. I couldn't support him any longer, could I? I made my peace with it, and supported Doug England, because I thought he was the best candidate. That's the way it works, right?

In turn, that's because the world never sits still, never stays the same. Every day, it's different. You have to change with it, adapt to it, reinvent yourself -- your business -- your town. It doesn't mean you abandon core beliefs, just that personal evolution never ceases. Such shifting realities depress some people, but not me. Every day's a challenge, and that's what matters. You win some, you lose some, and so on.

I understand that for many people, it's impossible to conceive of reality without conspiracy theories, but I'm here to tell you that no one's promised me anything, now or ever.

I can't speak for others, just for myself. It hasn't been that long since all the anonymous commentators were crowing about how Mayor Garner was going to give NABC a building a million bucks to open a brewery. Never happened, did it? Did any of them log back on to admit they were wrong?

Nope. How very typical, and of course, because I sign my name to everything, I'm open to being second-guessed at every turn. That’s the way it goes, and that’s why I detest the anonymity thing. Last time I checked, I’m a taxpayer, too, but that’s another story for another day.

So be it.

Doug England may or may not succeed. We may or may not always agree. Conditions will continue to change, and tactics will continue to evolve. I hope we can expand our business and operate a branch downtown, brew more beer, make some money and have some fun. But rest assured that nary a soul has “greased” this palm, nor do I expect it to happen.

Cheers.
